Chapter Nine
After a long soak in the tub, Shayla found herself confronted with a new face after Levi left. A Fae by the name of Cassius. The pink-haired beauty didnât say much, setting a tray of food on the bed before taking a seat on a chair, folding her arms. Her eyes were full of hostility, her anger undiluted and projecting. Shayla wasnât sure what she had done to warrant the other Faeâs rage, but she would discover it. If Cassius was important to Leviâs pack, that meant sheâd be important to Shayla too.
Tightening her robe, she headed toward the bed and sat, drawing the tray closer. Several items drew her attention. Her mouth watered. Nuts, grapes, fresh cheese, and crusty bread lay before her, but what she focused on was a bowl of Fae fruit she hadnât eaten in years. âAre these meedle berries?â
The hostile Faery gave a curt nod with her eyes narrowed. âYes. I got them yesterday,â she grumbled. She glared at Shayla briefly before looking away.
Shayla popped one yellow berry in her mouth, relishing the sweet, yet slightly tart flavor burst over her tongue. She couldnât help but close her eyes in delight. They were a healing berry, something to help Faes recover from any illness. In the days of Cerius, her father, meedle berry trees grew everywhere, but then they slowly died off. It was scarce to find a couple, much less a whole bowl full. Nature sometimes mimicked lifeâwhat flourished with positive energy, produced an abundant harvest, but negative output gave back nothing. Shayla used this analogy with Cassiusâto be positive.
Grabbing the bowl, Shayla rounded the bed. The Fae didnât look at her as she approached, the pink-haired Faeâs shoulders stiffening.
Shayla offered the bowl. âPlease share this with me,â she whispered.
Cassius barely glanced at her. âNo, thanks. I got them for you. They are good for healing.â
Undaunted, Shayla sat beside her. âPlease.â
The pink-haired Fae sighed, turning to glare. âLook, Your Highnessââ she sneered ââIâm not exactly thrilled to be here. I donât know you, and I donât trust you. The Kale pack is my homeâmy familyâbut that doesnât mean I have to like all the residents. Please eat, get dressed, then Iâll take you for a tour of the house.â
A hard emotion gutted Shayla as if sheâd been kicked in the teeth. She needed to approach this differently. Looking away, she wondered how to reach Cassius. âYou know, the night I arrived, I asked the Kale Alpha to kill me. I begged him.â She felt Cassiusâs eyes warm her profile, but she didnât look at her. She needed the Fae to understand she wasnât here to hurt anyone. âT-Trevin pushed some of his vile soul into me and then shredded my body with his cruelty. He told me I had to kill the alpha of a wolf pack and sent me on my way. I didnât want any of thisâall I wanted to do was dieâto be free.â Tears fell. She pushed them away, feeling exposed.
